I was saddened this week when I heard of the demise of the typewriter - the last factory is closing and there will be no more made. Though I have never been skilled at the typewriter, it has always held a type of magic, as I imagine the liberating effect it had on writers and women upon its arrival. Above is Angela Carter and her beloved typewriter.
Goodbye typewriter, we hope that like the polaroid a new generation will resurrect you.

I know one writer, Gerald Murnane ,who will grieve this loss. Mind you he tells me only recently he's finally bought a computer, for emails and the Internet he says but it won't be long before he uses the keyboard I suspect.
So sad to say goodbye to the wondrous typewriter though I have never actually used one.
I still have one GG!!! Love the blighters. That fabulous tap-tap - so busy, so physical. I understand you can get some software so your computer keyboard sounds like a typewriter, but I may be wrong... One of my young students handed in typewritten work - a lovely surprise. So yes, it could find new life in the future. Meanwhile, like you I'm sad to see the last factory closing...
I am afraid that I have always had bumble bees for fingers ladies when it comes to typewriters, but the fun of playing with them, the happy clack, to think that they will be gone is sad. Computers lack the chutzpah, the music and the beat.
What a great photo of Angela Carter. I haven't seen that one before. Thanks for your comment on my Underbelly post. As soon as I get a chance I'll reply to it. I miss typing on the old typewriters. I really am not suited to this internet age. xx
